Ukrainian army should offer “trial contracts” to military – expert
Ukraine should consider introducing a three-month preliminary contract for the military, after which it will have to choose whether or not to sign a basic contract for military service.
This was stated by Andriy Senchenko, president of the Association of Employers’ Organizations “National Association of Defense Industry Enterprises of Ukraine”, who spoke with Ukrinform.
“I think a three-month preliminary contract should be introduced today. That is, a person should voluntarily sign a contract for 100 days of military service. It will be an intensive training routine with multiple physical activities, after which people will be faced with a choice – sign the regular contract, serve in the reserve or resign, ”said the expert.
Such an option will help the military identify those who are truly ready to serve, as there is a situation today where many are unwilling to stay in the military after their term of service has ended.
However, according to the expert, it is first necessary to “improve” the system of incentives. In particular, military service should offer a range of opportunities for further personal development, and not just a place of temporary employment.
Senchenko stresses that it is not only about money, but also the possibility of receiving one’s own accommodation or higher education opportunities at the expense of the government.
“It is necessary for a people to be genuinely willing to serve … Today, however, the prestige of military service is fading, so it must be restored,” Senchenko added.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, the leader of the pro-presidential Servant of the People party, Oleksandr Kornienko, suggests that the Verkhovna Rada could abolish compulsory military conscription as early as 2023.
