The Ukrainian army shelled the village of Alexandrovka in the rebel-held area of the Donetsk region on Saturday, injuring a civilian, according to officials of the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic.
“Our brigade brought in a peaceful civilian from the city of Donetsk with a gunshot wound to his left thigh,” trauma surgeon Yuriy Ponomarev told The Associated Press.
Alexandrovka is located next to the front line and residents continue to come under regular shelling.
Local resident Valentina, who said she suffered a leg injury during the 2015 tensions, told the AP the shelling came regularly.
Another local resident, Svetlana, said civilians were so used to the shelling that they were no longer afraid.
“They are shooting at us every day. There are snipers working, there are flying drones and shells,” Svetlana said.
Russia has massed about 100,000 troops near Ukraine.
After the 2014 ouster of a Kremlin-friendly president in Kyiv, Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula and backed an insurgency in the country’s eastern industrial heartland.
Fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels has killed more than 14,000 people and efforts to reach a settlement have stalled.
