Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke for the first time about the losses suffered by the Ukrainian army, saying that between 50 and 100 people lose their lives every day defending the country.

As the world focuses on the damage the Ukrainian military is causing to the Russian army and the humanitarian plight of the refugees, whose number now exceeds six million, those who die in defense of their country have been forgotten.

With no precise estimates available, Zelenskyy said Monday. On May 23, the bombardment of the country to the east caused up to 100 dead in the army, in addition to the many civilian lives that were lost.

Dnipro, Irina, 35, returned from Italy, where she had moved with her three children after the start of the war, to bury her 38-year-old husband, told the BBC: ‘War is senseless, very stupid . There is no reason for this.

“For us, this is a great tragedy.”

Kseniia, her 37-year-old sister-in-law, said she was against any ceasefire agreement that would allow Russian forces to remain on Ukrainian territory, saying: “So many people have been killed.

“We have to fight for our right to exist, for our sovereignty. That’s why my brother was fighting. We must fight to drive out the Russians.

Zelenskyy’s announcement comes on the same day that US President Joe Biden, visiting Japan, said Russia must “pay a long-term price” for its “barbarism in Ukraine”.

When asked if the United States and its allies would defend Taiwan if attacked by China, he answered with an emphatic yes, saying, “That is the commitment we made.

“We agreed with the one China policy, we signed it…but the idea that [Taiwan] can be taken by force is simply not appropriate.

“It will dislocate the whole region and will be another action similar to what happened in Ukraine.”

The war has irrevocably changed the relationship between the West and Russia, just as it has changed Ukraine, whose military losses will have changed the lives of many Ukrainians, which will never be the same again.
