LUGANSK, February 13. /TASS/. Ukraine’s armed forces plan to send an assault force to the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), LPR People’s Militia spokesman Ivan Filiponenko said on Sunday.
According to Filiponenko, units of the 79th Airborne Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine “are preparing for deployment as a tactical assault force in the hinterland of the republic”. “Commander of the United Forces Operation (Kiev Armed Operation in the Donbass – TASS) [Alexander] Pavlyuk arrived in the Voitovo settlement to check the combat readiness of the 1st Battalion,” he said.
He also said that the air defense units of the DPR had conducted exercises to be able to repel a possible attack in due time.
The situation in the Donbass deteriorated dramatically on January 9, when Ukrainian troops resumed shelling along the entire line of contact after a long ceasefire.
Additional measures to control the ceasefire along the contact line in the Donbass have been in effect since July 27, 2020. The agreement came a year after the so-called indefinite ceasefire ended. was declared by the parties on July 21, 2019, following more than 20 unsuccessful attempts to end hostilities. Under the agreement, the parties to the conflict are prohibited from organizing offensive and reconnaissance operations, using any type of drone, opening fire, including with sniper weapons, deploy heavy weapons to populated localities and add engineering equipment to their positions. One of the main provisions is the use of disciplinary measures in case of violation of the ceasefire.
