Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine would undoubtedly achieve what he called “noble” goals.

“On the one hand, we help and save people, and on the other, we simply take measures to ensure the security of Russia itself,” Putin said. “Clearly we had no choice. It was the right decision.”

Millions of Ukrainians have been forced to flee the country since Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24 in what it called a special operation aimed at degrading the military capabilities of its neighbor to the south and to root out those whom it describes as dangerous nationalists.

Ukrainian forces mounted fierce resistance and the West imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia in an effort to force it to withdraw its forces.
